01 May 2009 - Setting the Record Straight...

...on some of the rumours, spin and speculation surrounding my recent departure from 2CC

It was my choice to leave. Not true. I was called in to the manager's office last Friday, told I was sacked and asked to return my door key then and there. It was a very brief conversation and came completely without warning.

It was about the ratings. Bullshit. The present breakfast host was on air before and during the most recent ratings period, so any decline in the numbers is as likely to be down to him as me. It may be worth noting that he was on the morning (9am to noon) time slot for an extended period prior to the survey and it really bombed.

It was about the Spalding case. In a way. But it's the reverse of what has been implied. It's my belief that if it hadn't been for the Spalding case I would have been gone back in November as soon as they put Parton on the payroll (RiotACT got it right).  But the lawyers told 2CC that success or failure in the case very much depended on my credibility as a witness. With the case out of the way, they fired me.

Hi Mike
I am originally from Sydney and used to love listening to you and Clive. I also enjoyed your Sunday morning program. From memory, it was your Sunday programme that announced the accident involving Dodi Fayed and Lady Di.
I always listened to your drive programme as well.

I've enjoyed listening to you when within reception range since the late 1960s in Newcastle.
Radio these days is a bit like going to a supermarket - there's a Coles, a Woolies, a Just Jeans and a McDonalds. To me Mike is the interesting little bookshop, not a predictable glitzy franchise. Mike, I think there's a job going up here at 2HD but not certain about management. You're overtly star quality, Mike (unlike myself whose star quality is more of an inner thing).

Hallo Mike

Upon my return I have heard Mike Parton hosting the breakfast show on 2XX. I have rang the radio station and was told thayou have been 'sacked'. I am shocked that they have replaced you with a weak and vague commentator like Mike Parton who is pussy-footing around without a proper opinion. The breakfast show is no longer the same without you. I believe that your involuntary departure as commentator is more a personal vendetta and has nothing to do with professionalism.
should you ever land a job in another radio station, please let me know.

Best wishes for the future

Mike, your knowledge and wisdom made enduring the commercial breaks bearable. I have tried to listen to your replacement and didn't last more than 10 minutes before switching to 666, and I am clearly not the only one of your loyal listeners to do so. The thinking radio audience of Canberra are the big losers, followed closely by the paying advertisers.

Hi Mike , couldn't believe you had been fired. Since moving to Canberra 3 years ago and being used to better radio(at times) in Sydney - you were a breath of fresh air with views and insights on the morning radio - the absolute wet sponge peanut 2CC have replaced you with is unbelievable - and the comments from people like the program manager are pathetic - I am no longer listening to 2CC - let me know ehere you may be heard next.

Hi Mike,

I'm an ex Police Officer and now completing a plumbing apprenticeship.

My boss and I had a morning ritual of listening to you and it always got our day off to a good start and put a smile on our faces. Your voice is sorely missed in our work van of a morning and, like others, we no longer listen to 2CC in the morning.

I hope you have grounds to pursue an unfair dismissal claim!

Take care brother.

Hi Mike
it took me a few days to realise you were not just on holidays but gone as I was out of town missed the paper
Certainly shows the listener the types of people running the station I have heard if you upset certain people you just disappear now I believe it
I listened to 2cc because of your ability to make the show very informative and the lighter fun parts always very respectful to your callers and I never missed having a chuckle at most of your comments and miss your radio show
we now have a wet sponge in Mark Parton and I dont bother to listen anymore I dont really care to hear him waffle about himself and name dropping, cutting people off when your name is mentioned.speaking of say hi to Julian from City news it was that inteview that I realised there was more to you not being there.
Well Mike the very best of luck in what ever you do.and thankyou for the top shows we have had here in Canberra you took the standard way up there and

Mike...Its been a while since I sopke to you in the mornings. I did not always agree with you, nor did I expect you to agree with me. Needless to say that I often tried to "editorialise" you recently as "Annonymous". I had a feeling that Parton was looking for a job and I often hinted at this to Rebecca & Bodana. I can't stand Parton and his 'brown-nosing' ways, especially with the local politicians that he tried unsuccesfully to join.I do miss you on 2CC and think that independant thought and media freedoms are now almost lacking in this pitiful place that was stupid enough to vote in 4 "greenies". Sorry to hear about you departure. We only listened to morning radio because of you and your opinions. As for your replacement, he needs to get another job (out of radio). We all agree, 2CC replaced a heavy weight (you) with a light weight (Parton). Canberra has not been well served by this decision, and perhaps that is the basis of the desision - we won't be getting the news behind the news anymore from 2CC. Trust we will hear you elsewhere, and thanks for your exemplary work on keeping us informed.

And now we're stuck with that idiot - no-one calls him because when they do he argues the point with them and then hangs up on them. And that green cactus thing - what drivel! I used to have the radio on in every room in my home, just in case I missed something. I just loved the relationship you had with Jane and the spontaneous banter between you - I haven't heard her smile since you left. Now I watch TV instead. Breakfast radio sucks!

Sorry Tony, but writing it all off as "that's radio" doesn't make it right.

As the English philosopher Edmund Burke said: "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

If what you're suggesting is true and there are lots of arseholes in the radio game, then the few good men definitely need to make their voices heard. Mike was indubitably one of these.

Mike I am very disappointed that you have been unceremoniously removed from our morning radio. I have only recently (12 months ago) refound you after avidly listening to you when I lived in Sydney. The other announcer that has replaced you is the reason I don't listen to FM morning radio any more and is certainly the reason I am not listening any more to the rubbish emmenating from 2CC by the very opinionated and wet Mark Parton! Mike, so disappointed to see you go and have watched the discussion here with sadness and interest.

I run a small metal fabrication business in Hume; it is not what I expected to do after my Fine Arts degree (I thought I would be driving taxis) but I am proud of my team - they are like an extended family- and the business could not continue without their enthusiasm and commitment.

We used to always have you on in the mornings in the workshop but now we are going with Triple J (because the youngsters like it).

What strikes me as strange about all this is how bitter the ex staff members who have posted messages seem to be. I have also spoken to other ex staff members who feel the same way but will protect their identities by keeping their names confidential.

If every staff member who has ever worked there ends up speaking ill of the place, it makes me wonder how well they look after their staff. I would be mortified if our ex staff members were talking about us in this way, but we work hard to make sure people are respected, valued, and appreciated. If we did not do this we would be unable to attract or retain high quality staff.

I am not a media person but find it hard to understand how a radio station which is just another Canberra small business could survive while generating so much bad blood among its staff - and now also among its listeners.

Now we have blancmange, pleasantries and soft touch and no thinking - just platitudes to the present status quo - Those whom have felt your questions that they could not answer will be thrilled. Jon S Katy G and all the crowd. No queries about key issues and no insights. Apart from the station management I am not sure as to whom will be listening. Government advertisers will be enthused - with no analysis and cerebral input.
Yes it is Newsradio and even possibly 2CN - provided that the ABC 'presenters' can stop pushing their agendas down our throats - that may well be impossible. Anyway best wishes for future.
Miss all of your contacts and questions - Parton cannot cut the mustard.

As the thinking people of Canberra, Mike was one of our own, and he was taken away from us by cretins who never made it past the third grade.

The only way to get our message through to these vacuous morons is during the radio ratings, which will probably happen again in August.

Spread the word that even for people who listen to 2cc or 2ca (which are both owned by the same numbskulls), if they get a radio listening diary to fill in, DO NOT TICK 2CC OR 2CA. Tick the ABC instead (Aunty deserves our support).

The amount of advertising commercial stations get depends on their ratings, so that will soon drive the message home. They dropped badly in the last ratings, so let's help them drop right off the planet next time. This we owe to Mike.

To refer to the imbeciles at 2CC as 'management' is an insult to managers everywhere and something I take personal offence to as a manager.

These bozos wouldn't know what to do if their asses were on fire.

2CC is part of the Capital Radio Network, known as CrapNet within the industry for paying crap wages and hiring crap staff. Mike was one of their few exceptions.

Because of the crap wages, they've got naive and inexperienced kiddies running the show, who would have no appreciation or understanding of Mike's enormous contribution to Canberra radio.

Don't waste your time writing to them, they don't give a rats about you and you're lucky to even get an automated response. Just switch them off and tell your family and friends to do the same.

Distraught to see you go, Mike, but how nice to know you won't be propping up those losers anymore.

Hi Mike

Shocked and disapppointed is probably the best way to describe how I feel about you no longer at CC. I didn't agree with everything you said, but that's what makes the show so enjoyable. You need someone with balls to be a talk back guy, and you had them. Parton doesn't.

I know you're feeling bitter..and many other things, but think of this. Mark Parton comes with alot of baggage, and CC managers will be spending most of their time putting out his fires. From what I have heard (and again, only rumours but head from a few people), there are alot of people out for a piece of Mark. It will all blow up one day.

So, what do I do now? I don't have any options. Don't like Parton, or 2CA...or 106 for that matter. Might have to go the ABC. Gasp!

All the best, and I look forward to reading about what you have planned.

Reply to Peter Davidson:

No, I'm sorry but I won't. He is obviously a friend of yours which is why you sold out on Mike Jeffreys. I have listened to him on many occasions and do not like his sloppy style of hosting and will not be listening to the morning show on 2CC any longer. As I said in my previous email I have already set my morning radio to 666 ABC and will stick with them until Jeffreys is reinstated or I will follow him to his next radio program.

I did put up with Mark Parton when Mike Jeffreys was on leave but Mark Parton is not a good presenter by ANY stretch of the imagination (yours or mine) and I will not be putting myself through the agonising morning show on 2CC any longer.

Big mistake.....Big

My comments to 2CC 5/5/09:

Dear 2CC,

I am so disappointed that Mike Jeffreys is no longer the 2CC morning host. I have listened to him for years, sending him many emails etc. I found his show very entertaining and he always kept us abreast on all those important news items in and about Canberra with a flare that only he could deliver. Everyone loved Mike Jeffreys and I'm sure that 2CC will suffer with the loss of him on the morning show.

I cannot believe that you have put Mark Parton in his place as Mark is NOT at the same standard as Jeffreys. I have always found Mark to be totally annoying and a "sitting on the fence" type of interviewer. I will not be listening to your morning program anymore and have already set my morning radio to 666 ABC as anything is better than listening to Mark Pardon rattle on. Most of my friends and work colleagues feel the same and will not be tunning into 2CC in the morning.

Very Disappointed,
Patti Seddon

Mike you must have some contacts. I suggest you do this as you wont have a problem getting references. Find a community radio station, start ringing some of the business that advertised on your show and do your own thing. You will have plenty of listeners.

Hi Mike, I have waited awhile, before posting on your site as I have gone through with what feels quite similiar to a unexpected, sudden death experience,
strange, yes perhaps, but that has been the stages of feelings that have passed through, by, and over, though still there, I think I have gained some more perspective on the situation in the last week or so, when I have read, mulled, & considered the bigger picture of what has occured, yes, and thank you for your most recent site editorial.
I agree with most, if not all of what has been expressed by everyone in comments on your site.

I was not with talk radio much more than as a level of entertainment and sometimes basic information interest, both in Sydney pre-1999, and after moving to ACT early that same year, thus as a result was unaware of your being on the radio in Canberra, prior & immediately post 18 / 1 / 03.

I know that I'm much the better for having listened, and more recently, finally gaining
some self-courage to speak with your good self
on the open line, as well as sending a few emails.
Without rambling on much more, I firstly would hope that you can have a good rest & recovery from what has occured to you, that time can /would /will be a healer, at least in part,
and that Canberra ACT region would/ will continue to be home base for you in every way, and in that context, we will have the opportunity to hear on the airwaves / bandwidth, the best radio broadcaster that Canberra has ever / will ever have, and I say that thoughtfully, and truthfully.

with high regards

how sad it is when 2CC management fails to recognise true journalistic professionalism
- I sincerely wish that when 2CC managment recognises their failure to look beyond the immediate issues, what ever they be, that you will have the oportunity to return
- if the cause of your sacking is due to the fear of the management being involved with litiagation then how sad it is when our society puts more store on knee jerk protectionism than truth in journalism

Prior to getting the program director's job at CC he was, among other thngs, providing traffic reports for MixFM and 104.7!!!

Check his background. The guy's got no experience managing at this level. However, he was a mate of Parton's from before their time together now at CC...so there's your smoking gun.

Parton just copies your program and is useless to listen too. I remember you came in when the fires started in Jan.2003. It was your voice that kept me calm. I feel like I've lost a close friend. I feel sorry for Jane trying to have a working relationship with that dork. Wont be surprised if she moves onwards and upwards to Sydney and the big money. I just cottoned to the awful truth today, I thought you were on leave. The new boy does not cut the mustard, he requires his listeners to stimulate him, not provide the stimulus as you did. What a disappointing turnup for the books. 2CC are obviously not as smart as they think, you were the attraction in the morning, not the station. We are going to miss you very much - your opinions, your session with Jason and the bit of volatility which made your show so interesting. Like the others, we will have to find a new station with a presenter who makes us think. Good luck for the future and please let us know where we can tune in again.

I have listen to you since you were on drive and this is the worst decision they could have made, they mustn't want ratings. Like many others I refuse to listen to 2CC until price comes on at 9. Hope you secure a new job soon, at least then we have the chance of hearing you via a stream on the internet. Thanks for all the years of listening pleasure you have given me and my sons. Ian

Morning Canberra radio is pretty limp without your understated barbs at our idiotic local pollies and the self righteous prejudices of the left.

Suspected something was up on return from hols with no mention of you in 2CC program or web material. Your predecessors in the slot also became non-persons overnight, so its pretty typical form for 2CC management.

Have since discovered some of them alive and well on other networks so there is a bright side to look forward to. Best wishes for the future.

Hey Mike.

Thanks for the update and putting the record straight for us - your loyal fans. Much appreciated.

I had feared the worse - that you were sacked without warning, but deep down I had hoped you had left the station of your own choice (though, after listing you ever since you came to Canberra, I knew this wasn't your style - you never give up without a fight).

It doesn't seem like you were afforded the principle of 'natural justice' - any chance of taking 2CC back into the courts? Twice in 6 months might get to them! I know it wouldn't get your job back (and the way you were treated they don't deserve you anyway) - but hey, might make you (and us) feel better!

Like some of the previous posts have said - please keep us informed on what you're up to.

Your a great talent Mike, you are missed but won't be forgotten. Take care and all the best.

Your friend...

Darren Giles
Gungahlin

PS: Was listening to the Continuous Call today (now the best thing on 2CC) and heard your 'Yass Real Estate' commercial. Hope they have signed up for a lot of advertising so we can hear you (if only in 30 second bursts).

Hey Mike, devastated to hear you're not on the wireless anymore - mornings just won't be the same out here without you ...

By the way, my eldest showed me some strange talk about a 'Mean Man' on 2CA's Twitter, are they talking about you? Have a look at http://twitter.com/2ca and see if you can make sense of it.

Anyway, best of luck in whatever you end up doing. Your a legend.

Mike

As a person who worked with you, and learnt from you on air at 2CC for I number of yours I was shocked at the news.

However then again due to poor management and being a media outlet with no real vision or plan I guess I shouldn’t be suppressed at your sacking.

To replace a Canberra institution and a professional broadcaster with guts and determination with a piss weak music DJ, will be devastating to not only the company’s bottom line but real debate and community accountability within the Canberra.

The people of Canberra should find it offensive that 2CC could replace you with a second rate broadcaster such as Mark Parton, lets face it they would have gotten him very cheap.

All the best for the future

It's 2CC...does it really matter? <10% of the audience (at peak, now <6%)? Of radio listeners. And by that I mean more than the people who tune in for want of something better to do for the 30 minute commutes to and from work. Would the total committed audience fill the Canberra Theatre? No.

How is this important? I'm sorry you have had to move on, but welcome to the real world.

mike sorry you're gone from 2cc. what fools. i'll now be listening to 2gb online. i heard one of your dedicated listeners ring morrison the other day to ask what happened and he said that 2cc had made a stupid decision and ditched the only conservative voice in canberra and it was up to the audience to fight this one. i thought it was funny to hear canberra radio being talked about on sydney airwaves. all the best with your future.

Hi Mike..Very sorry to see you go. When you were away a few weeks ago, I emailed you on your return and said that if you go away again, take Parton with you. Very pale and boring person. Since you have gone, myself and 6 other friends do not listen to 2cc until Steve Price come on.Have listened to you everyday since you started. Enjoyed your show very much. All the best for the future, hope to be able to listen to you again, one day. One door shuts a better one opens.Look after your self.

Mike,

After listening to Mark Parton a while back I emailed Kevin Blyton asking him to sack you and put Mark on instead.

Thankyou for listening Kevin!

Unbelievable!! I never make comments but feel that you have been unfairly treated.

The quality of management at 2cc needs to be reviewed.

How much cheaper Is Mark to employ? It would want to be at least 50% as he is only gong to have half your ratings.

Morning radio in Canberra has lost its gloss!! Back to the CD player in the car.

Good Luck in the future and I hope you stay in Canberra

I got into a routine of listening to you in the morning as I woke up and prepared for the day. I enjoyed the fact that you were happy to give people a go or challenge them when they skirted the edges of reality or truth.

I am unable to take light and bright at that time of the day, Parton just doesn't do it for me. And who will hold the climate change crew to account if not you.

For heavens sake find another station in Canberra and get back into it. I haven't come up with anything close to an alternative.

I second the above comments and remember you on Sydney radio many years ago when I was a lad, when Mum used to listen to you.
When I came to Canberra back in '03 I was pleased to hear you and greatly enjoyed listening to you. I too have turned the dial in the morning to ABC as I can't stand that less than beige Parton.
There's only Welshy and the trading post as the reason to tune into 2cc now.
Good luck for the future and hope to hear you again soon.

Email to 2cc

Re: Mike Jeffreys departure

Well I have done it again. Three days straight now and I am enjoying Ross Solly on 666.

I wake up to Jim Ball at 0600 and listen to the remainder of his show, listen to Jane for the early news then switch straight to 666 until 0900 when again listen to Jane and then Steve Price. I am also turning the dial at 1200 now to listen to Genevieve Jacobs whom I am finding more enjoyable than 'same old' boring Tim Webster. Of course I then switch back to Mike Welsh from 1500.

I'ts a great shame about Mike Jeffreys. 2CC is not the same to me anymore. I will never listen to that Parton broadcasting, never ever.

Paul

I can only say 2cc have lost the plot Mike. I have emailed a couple of times advising of my displeasure that you are not on air also challenging the current host to let the protesters have their say on air. Shock horror no replies as yet. All the best Mike you had a great programme.

My wife and I have since refused to listen to 2CC. We hated Mark Parton on 106.3 and we hate him on 2CC.

It's 2CC's loss and you were a great host.

Like Paul I have also emailed 2CC management. This was their reply

"Thanks for the feedback. We are making some changes to 2CC - including
Breakfast.

Over time, Mark will do well in the slot.

I hope you continue to listen and enjoy 2CC."

I'll be looking for a new station in the mornings now.

Sorry that you have left Mike. Sue the stupid bastards.

It's disgraceful the way that 2cc has brought this about and a sad day for Canberra radio.

I'm a paperboy as well and I fear that morning radio will be boring and unashamedly biased to the left.

We'll keep an ear out for you mate.
