04 Jun 2009 - High Speed Analysis for the Conversationalist on the Run
1.The Chaser.Did they go too far? Did they steal the idea from the Onion? Possibly not. The Onion is obviously satirical. The Chaser had to explain the joke, if you can call it that.
2.Joel Fitzgibbon's Resignation. Spinning to the end, Joel has managed to make it appear that he came in late, has been let down by others but is somehow doing the right thing while those around him didn't. Bart Simpson would be proud.
3.Swine Flu. Victorian Premier John Brumby has suggested a decision by NSW Health banning students from attending school for a week on their return from Victoria could be an act of retaliation for his state's successful tourism push in NSW.Way too much credit, Mr. Brumby. If the government of the great state of New South Wales was really that clever the place wouldn't be in the mess it is.
4.The Economy. Australia is technically not in a recession because we didn't buy nearly as much from other countries as we normally would have. This is all down to the fine economic stewardship of Mr. Rudd and Mr. Swan (not just my opinion, theirs as well even if they're trying to be humble) so we can have confidence in where the country is headed but not too much because then we might start spending up big again and because most things we want to buy aren't made here that might put us in a recession. Technically speaking.
5.Latest Mobile Phone Horror.Bending your elbow to bring the phone to ear height for extended periods "...chokes the blood supply to the nerves... makes the nerves short-circuit. The next thing you know, there's tingling in the ring and small finger," according to the director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. One to watch. Could easily supplant Swine Flu as next headline health scare.
An then there are those folk who were listening to Mike but who weren't fortunate enough to have radio diaries to record our listening. How do they choose who gets those diaries? No one has ever offered one to me and yet I listen to radio at least 18 hours a day (sometimes while snoozing) and rarely watch tv....I don't know anyone who has a radio diary..do you?
I love the Chasers but I did feel uncomfortable watching that segment. I can see what they were doing and it was black humour but I knew there would be an uproar too. It's funny how so many people say "I never watch the Chasers" and then go on to describe what was on the program and what they thought of it! I guess these controversial segments do one thing and that is get people watching so they can say "I never watch the Chasers but..."
